Jesse Higman, who won a 2009 Mayor's Arts Awards award, and last Year's Blitz Art Walk Award for the black-walled show at Vermillion of his large cosmic paintings, is hosting a group painting happening in the darkened atmosphere of his studio at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, where "A universe is guaranteed to be formed."
As the abstract expressionists said, "Painting in an arena in which to act." Higman, who worked in Grunge through the 90's with Seattle's big rock bands like Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Heart designing album covers, posters, shirts and stages sets has been directing his visions into his new studio and a large black table he fills with water, "a magic pool" as he calls it," out of which come ducks, birds, fish, cells, continents and the cosmos. Higman, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair from a car accident at 15, has engineered his own process of action painting which he calls Illuvium, using physics with the concepts of biology and cosmology to "show the life formed in generative relationships, playing with energy to coax the joyful, convivial forces that produce life."
For this event, Higman invites a limited number of City Arts Fest ticket holders to his private studio to pour minerals on his largest table, exploring the influence of the individual in a group composition. it is not just the paint on the table that is the art, you are, the room is, and in this case, so is the impressionistic video of the event. Add your influence to this cultural composition, watch sparkling minerals settle in wave patterns, and be part of documenting the phenomena!
